WATCH: Shygirl Releases Highly Anticipated EP ‘ALIAS’

UK native Shygirl is back with a momentous new EP release titled ALIAS. It follows a long list of successful projects from the genre-blending artists whose sound is a unique combination of electronica, hyper-pop, and hip-hop. The title ALIAS represents four separate identities that are all exaggerated yet hyper-real of her own personality. Baddie, Bae, Bovine and Bonk were introduced in the music video for “SLIME,” which was animated by Sy Blake and Maurice Andresen. All are featured throughout separate tracks and lyric videos for the project. Each character represents a different personality trait: sexual deviance, playful fairy innocence, confidence almost to the point of cockiness, and Shygirl’s own South London roots.

Each of the tracks off of this EP are hard hitting, in-your-face bangers whose sublimity is unmatched by other competitors in her field. “SLIME” is the lead single off of the EP for obvious reasons. Its lyrics are provocative and unflinching while the beat is cleanly produced with growls and Shygirl’s signature echoic moans in the background. But, the most stand-out track from this project is the closer, “SIREN.” It sees Shygirl as a “siren on the rocks calling you into the deep,” which is the perfect encapsulation of the erotically charged and devious sound that resonates throughout this EP. The beat is charged and is just as perfect for dancing in a crowded, dark club on a night-out as it is for dancing in your headphones at home.

Shygirl is anything but shy in “FREAK” which is as equally disturbing as it is enticing with its racing beat and darkly sexual undertones. Shygirl’s signature pairing of pitched-up vocals with her naturally deeper singing voice is an intoxicating experience that leaves the track washing over you as you listen. It looks right at you without flinching, much like the animated aliases in each of her videos.

One of the most unique tracks off of ALIAS is “LENG” which features a relentless beat of high-pitched cartoonish noises that modulate over Shygirl’s impressive bars. Almost before it even fully catches flight, the track drastically melts off as the beat slows down telling the user repeatedly “You wanna know who I am.”

It’s clear that listeners do want to know who she is as the EP has already garnered thousands of streams and heralded critical acclaim across the board. The stellar production on this EP is achieved through a collection of some of the most renowned producers working out of the UK to date. Grammy nominated artist and producer SOPHIE is credited on “SLIME,” as well as Happa and Sega Bodega on several of the other tracks. Her sound is perfectly curated and meticulously crafted to create one of the best releases of the year.

Shygirl is certainly the future of electronic/hip-hop music. Her sound is an even further development of the boundary pushing styles of other artists like Dorian Electra, Charli XCX, and FKA twigs.
